AI Citation

An AI citation is a generative engine naming a specific page as the source of an answer. It differs from a brand mention: a citation carries a link the user can follow, and therefore measurable traffic.

The citation-versus-mention distinction is the one most often skipped in measurement. A mention reflects brand awareness; a citation tells you which piece of content is doing the work. A report that does not separate them gives you no direction for improvement.

Citation selection is not tightly bound to classic rankings. An Ahrefs analysis from October 2025 found that 28.3% of the pages ChatGPT cites most often have zero organic visibility on Google — a small but well-written page can outrank a large site inside an answer.

Why measure citations and mentions separately?

A mention is your brand name appearing in an answer; a citation is your page being named as the source. They tell you different things: mentions track awareness, citations track which of your pages is doing the work.

A report that collapses both into one number gives you no direction. "Visibility up 20%" hides whether the gain came from a new page or simply from brand awareness. In a dashboard these belong in separate columns.

What do cited pages have in common?

There is no reliable formula, but two observations hold up. First, citation selection is not tightly coupled to classic ranking: in Ahrefs' October 2025 analysis, 28.3% of the pages ChatGPT cited most had no organic Google visibility at all.

Second, cited content usually answers one question directly and ties that answer to a verifiable number or source. Broad, multi-topic "ultimate guide" pages are at a disadvantage precisely because they offer no clean passage to lift.

How do you track citations?

Three sources, all free. The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools gives real data from the index behind ChatGPT search. In GA4 you can segment referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. The third is manual: ask a fixed question set on a schedule and record the answers.

The critical part of manual measurement is holding conditions constant — same questions, same language, and for location-dependent questions the same stated location. Measurements taken under varying conditions cannot be compared.

Frequently asked

Do citations bring traffic?

Sometimes. A citation carries a clickable link, but click-through is lower than classic search because the user already has the answer. The real value of a citation is usually not traffic — it is being present as a source at the moment a decision is made.

The same question gets a different answer every time. How do I measure that?

A single measurement is not meaningful; you need a sample. Ask the same question on a schedule and track the rate — in how many of N attempts you appeared. One result is neither proof of success nor of failure.

A competitor gets cited and we don't. Where do I look first?

Access. Are OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Bingbot allowed in your robots.txt? If they are blocked, no amount of content quality will get you into an answer. Second: does the page contain a block that answers that question directly?
