A brand mention is your brand name appearing in an AI answer, with or without a source link. It shows the model recognises the brand and considers it relevant in that context, and it usually precedes citations.
Mentions mostly come from training data or third-party sources. That is why changes on your own site do not move them in the short term — what moves them is what other people write about the brand.
The most direct levers are entity consistency and third-party presence: using the same brand definition everywhere, appearing in comparison lists and review sites, and being covered by trade press.
Why is a brand mention its own metric?
In a generated answer your brand name can appear with no link at all. Classic analytics cannot see it — there is no click and no referral. For the user, though, the outcome is the same: the brand was among the options at the moment the decision was made.
That is why mentions sit in a column of their own, separate from citations. A brand can be mentioned constantly without ever being cited, which tells you the entity identity is strong even if the content is not.
What feeds mentions?
Mentions depend on the model associating your brand with a category. That association is built mostly off-site: independent listings, comparison articles, industry directories, press coverage and user forums.
The most concrete thing you can do on your own site is to state one consistent sentence defining the brand and its category on every page, and to fill in sameAs on your Organization markup. Every field in your markup is written by you, so all of it is a claim; sameAs is the one verifiable field, because it links to records you do not control.
Frequently asked
What should I do if mention counts are low?
First look at where you are mentioned at all. If the answer never names you, examine which brands it does name and find the third-party listings those brands appear in. The leverage is usually in those listings, not on your own site.
Can a mention be negative?
Yes. An answer can name your brand alongside a shortcoming. Measurement should therefore record not only whether you appeared but in what context.
Do mentions lead to citations?
Not necessarily. A strong entity identity raises mentions, but a citation requires a page that answers that specific question directly. They are two separate pieces of work.
