Knowledge Graph

A knowledge graph stores entities and the relationships between them. Google's knowledge panel is its visible surface; a brand resolved in the graph is more likely to be named in answers.

Most of what enters the graph comes from third-party sources. Creating a consistent record on structured sources such as Wikidata, Crunchbase and LinkedIn matters more than anything you change on your own site.

Your side of the work is to point at those records: the sameAs list in Organization schema should link to verifiable profiles. Linking to profiles that do not exist works against you.

What a knowledge graph means for a brand

A knowledge graph is a structure of entities and the relationships between them: "GeoRanke is a software company", "its founder is this person", "it is based in Türkiye". When a search system knows those relationships, it does not have to guess when answering a question about your brand.

In generative engines the consequence is direct: if a model can associate your brand with a category, you enter the candidate list for "best X tools". Without that association, no amount of content quality gets you onto the list.

How do you get into the graph?

There is no application form; the graph is derived from external sources. The order that works in practice: get covered by an independent publication, create a Wikidata item, complete LinkedIn and Crunchbase profiles, then collect all of them in sameAs on your Organization markup.

The common mistake is reversing the order and creating the Wikidata item first. Wikidata's notability rule requires independent references; items sourced only to a company's own website get nominated for deletion.

Frequently asked

Do I need a knowledge panel?

No. A panel is a visible outcome; the substance is being recognised as an entity. A model can associate your brand with its category without one.

Will adding markup get me into the knowledge graph?

Not on its own. Markup makes your claim machine-readable; verification comes from records you do not control. The two work together.

How long does it take?

It varies and cannot be guaranteed, because it depends on independent sources accumulating. Sources that tell you there is no shortcut are more trustworthy than those that promise one.
